Dead Gods

Young one listen well,
I have existed for many thousand years...
I was king and conquerer,
I was lover, I was warrior.
I was perfect and imperfect in my deeds.
I strode with giants, made the heavens
the earth, the stars.
My deeds were known throughout the lands.

In love and war I stood tall above the mountains of the earth.
I was old when the Pyramids were young,
When men spoke my name, it was in whispers of reverence.
Men, fleeting lives they lived,
How I miss them now.

Silenced, for those thousand years.
Turned to dust by the passage of time.
Yet still I prevailed, lingering
In a tomb, or buried, forgotten.
I slept as the dead.

Unearthed, excited men found me again.
Spoke in hushed whispers once more
when they saw my name.
They came to see me and I lived again.

Hundreds of years passed again,
The ages of man slipped me by.
Wars, famine, I knew them not.
Great men stopped before my pedestal,
Seeking my insight, I gave Caeser and Napoleon pause.

Another hundred years a thousand, and men came again,
new men with sledgehammers.
Praising the name another god,
They slew my family, my brothers my sisters.
They slew me.

I lie dying now,
A bit of rubble, dust,
A "false idol".
I am slain.

Keeper of the Key

The day has gone, the night has come
The halls lie deathly still.
Till morning wake, and silence take
these empty rooms to fill.

Alone I stay, amid the fray
of day long passed by.
While others sleep
a duty I keep, to clean these empty halls.

Every floor, every window
every empty stall.
I've seen them twice, three times
a thousand, I cannot recall.

Cyclical in nature, yet certain as can be,
A habit and a duty to the keeper of the key.

Fairies at my Window sill

This morning I was greeted
By fairies at my window sill.
Fleeting fluttering they flew,
Wings beating like tiny drumbeats.
Forms feathered,
Pink and Purple like cotton candy.
Song sweet sugar, greeting
Warning waning.

Hovering they danced,
Round the feeder hanging.
Pausing, perching, purposed
Tiny tongues flicking
Candy-apple red.

Eyes intelligent peered upon me,
Intruder through the glass.
Beyond, being, befuddled
Watching their graceful beauty
As they drank their fill.

High octane,
Corn sugar,
Sunflower gold it glistened
Like Bradbury's Dandelion Wine.
Whimsical, wondrous, worried
That I would encroach.

Moments, minutes, meticulous
Tiny talon claws lifting
Wings gossamer flitting
Them to fly away,
So my fairies dance away.

In Waking

Just something I thought up this morning.  A bit of creative exercise.

I awoke this morning
With eyes still dreaming
That not everything was as I was seeing.
Faces old or young at heart
That since long ago from me did part.
I saw within a gentle smile
In those I’d seen in not a while,
That the mysteries of the unknown
Were to them as lovely home.
They soothed the thoughts
Of my troubled mind,
That there was more to life for me to find.
That if I should seek
In questions deep,
What more that dreams in dreaming lie.
